My Equipment

Photographic Equipment

Like many nature photographers, my equipment has varied over the years. The images of my portfolio were taken with film formats ranging from 35mm up to 8x10. Fully 90% of this work was the result of two medium format cameras; the Pentax 67II and the Fuji GX617 panorama. And yes, you read correctly, none were captured from a digital camera. Well built and equipped with great optics, they were perfect for field work. However, with big cameras comes big camera vibration; this combined with slow film mandated that every photograph be shot mounted to a tripod. For 15 years I’ve used the same Gitzo tripod and Arca-Swiss ball head. All of which are ruggedly built equipment to meet the challenges of outdoor photography.

Post Capture Equipment

From the very beginning I’ve shot with transparency film, most of which was Fuji Velvia. Post capture processing begins with a high resolution drum scan so that the image can be brought into the digital domain. From here, in the digital darkroom, I create a master file utilizing Photoshop within a PC environment. After I’ve completed the necessary tone and color adjustments, the final print is created using a large format Epson printer and their Ultrachrome pigment inks.
